American Avocet

An American Avocet, way the hell out of its wintering range. It should be somewhere in Mexico, or on the Gulf of Mexico’s coast, not tramping about some pond in Delta. Shouldn’t have taken that left turn at Albuquerque!

Its pretty upturned bill can be used to filter bits of food from the water, or dig in mud, or even snatch insects from the air.
