Femmes au jardin
Femmes au jardin (“Women in the garden”) — Pierre Bonnard, 1891
I’d never heard of this guy, or the “Nabi” movement he was a part of. The term is coined from a Hebrew word meaning “prophet”, and this eclectic group of artists saw themselves as the forerunners of a new kind of art. For a dozen years they exhibited highly stylised works that put subjectivity and symbolism over accurate representation.
It’s wild, and I’m kinda into it!
