La porte de l’enfer
La porte de l’enfer (“The Gates of Hell”) — originally commissioned in 1880, never quite finished in Rodin’s lifetime.
The piece stands 6m high and 4m wide! Various figures would eventually be pulled out to be produced as freestanding sculptures, such as The Thinker (symbolising Dante pondering his life choices as he gazes into Hell, or maybe Rodin himself, or maybe Adam) and The Three Shades at the very top.
