Le Berceau
Le Berceau (“The Cradle”) — Berthe Morisot, 1872
Impressionists counted a few women in their ranks, including Morisot who it seems mostly focused on the private lives of upper-middle-class women. This painting shows her own sister, Edma Pontillon, watching over her newborn daughter. It’s a super intimate moment that I don’t think a male artist could have properly captured, even if he’d been around to witness it.
