Melk Abbey

We weren’t allowed to take photos anywhere inside the abbey, but here is the gorgeous Baroque church entrance. This structure dates to the early 1700’s, but the abbey was founded in 1089. The gorgeous and extensive library in particular inspired Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose; it wasn’t set here, but he name-dropped the place with one of the protagonists, Adso of Melk.
