Red-necked Pharalope

A lifer, identified by the guides as a Red-necked Pharalope. It is a teeny thing, maybe a third the size of nearby mallard, and the black-and-white streaked body says it’s immature or a nonbreeding adult.

A non-breeding or immature Red-necked Pharalope on the water, way in the distance. It is partly hidden by rolling waves, and the water is dark green from tree reflections
