The River Thames Looking Towards Westminster from Lambeth
Giovanni Antonio Canal (a.k.a. “Canaletto”) was an extremely prolific Venetian artist who started painting the people and landscapes of his city, many of which were sold to Englishmen on the “Grand Tour” of Europe (and especially Italy). He moved to London in 1746 and painted many views of the city. This one was done 1746–1747. Westminster Abbey and Westminster Bridge are prominent.
