Vladislav Hall
In the old Royal Palace, we have Vladislav Hall. Built 1493–1502 by genius architect Benedikt Rejt during the reign of Vladislav / Vladislaus II, King of Bohemia, it was the largest secular space in Prague at the time. The intricate stone vaulting system in the ceiling was what allowed it to hold up without pillars.
The hall was used for banquets, receptions, coronations, and other important events. It was also apparently big enough to accommodate jousting tournaments. The “Knights’ Stairway” to one side, leading to a nearby courtyard, has very low and sloping steps that can handle horses. I did wonder what that corridor was about; I thought maybe it was to cart in stuff for feasts and whatnot.
Also to one side is the Diet Hall, so called because the kings would burn up calories arguing with delegates from the aristocracy and the clergy. True story!
