Unlimited Growth Increases the Divide
The Del Mar Inn at 553 Hamilton, built in 1912, is the last original building on its redeveloped block, successfully holding out against BC Hydro in the 80s when they wanted to buy land for their new head office.
These 7″ copper letters, by artist Kathryn Walter in collaboration with owner George Riste, were installed in 1990 as a protest against the rapacious power plays of real estate development.
The Del Mar continues to provide housing for lower-income downtown residents; non-profit art groups can rent out the ground floor at reasonable rates.
